All of the photographs in this
section were taken in Oak Creek Canyon on July 1st, 2006. The fire
was stopped before it reached
Slide Rock. There was much less fire damage than I expected, and what
damage there was, was sporadic. It burned in isolated pockets, crawled
down specific gullies, but never crossed the highway. I'm assuming
there was not
more fire damage because of the pounding the fire received from the air
and ground. It is my understanding that some of the roadside
fires were started by firefighters to help prevent the fire
from
crossing
the
highway.
I was
also able to see, and photograph, some of things that firefighters
did to protect
buildings in the canyon (remember not a single structure was destroyed!).
When the trails in the National Forest reopen, I will photograph the
area near Brins Mesa (on the other side of the mountain from Oak Creek
Canyon). I expect this area to be much worse.
